Overview

This school is a six month, entry-level course designed to train those with or without prior experience to impact nations, communities, and individuals through health care. Students benefit from the expert instruction of practicing professionals including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, dental hygienists, social workers, and health educators.

Lecture Phase
The three (3) month lecture phase includes:

Basic Function of the Human Body
Understanding the Disease Process

Strategies in Primary Health Care
Immunization
Common Diseases in Developing Nations
Malnutrition
Dehydration
Assessing and Caring for Children

Practical Clinical Skills
Basic Physical Assessment
Wound care
Sterile Technique
Medication Administration
Vital Signs
Emergency Childbirth
First Aid
Managing Medical Emergencies

There are a few supplies that you will need to purchase before coming. These are medical supplies which you can buy at any medical supply store or online:
Otoscope
Penlight
Wristwatch with seconds hand
Bandage Scissors
Stethoscope
Blood Pressure Cuff

Outreach Phase
Following the lecture phase are 12 weeks of field assignment in developing nations. Working alongside physicians, physician's assistants, nurses, laboratory technicians and other primary health care workers, students will practice basic clinical skills and cross-cultural communication. Running clinics, teaching basic health care and sanitation, and living in close proximity to those being served gives students first-hand understanding of the problems faced in those nations.

 

Cost

$5900 - Includes room and board in Lakeside as well as outreach airfare and ground fees (food, housing, and transportation).

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:
Applications for Canadian citizens should be completed no later than 1 month prior to the start of the school. For all other international applicants, completed applications should be received 4 months prior to the start of the school (Africans at least 6 months.) You must have a passport that is still valid up to six months after completion of the school. Each family member coming must have their own passport, including each child.

 

Prerequisites
Completion of the Discipleship Training School and Field Assignment (DSP 211,212 ) or Crossroads Discipleship Training School (IDS 703/704).

Accreditation
Twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) semester equivalent credits will be earned upon successful completion of the Introduction to Primary Health Care Lecture Phase (CNH 261) and Field Assignment (CNH 262). These credits may be applied to a U of N degree program or transferred to other participating colleges or universities.
